Gormire Lake, North Yorkshire.

Saturday 25th June see’s our third weekend run of the year, taking in the beautiful surroundings of the National Park at Sutton Bank.

Meet 10:30am at the Sutton Bank National Park Visitor Centre Car Park – toilets available, and a cafe for post-run too! Please bring change for parking as there are pay-and-display meters.

Please note that due to the location – THIS WILL BE A HILLY ROUTE.

For those of you that may be interested, we are also hoping to have a little Open Water Swim at Gormire Lake. We’ll decide at what point we swim on the day.

For those of you that haven’t attended a Saturday run before, we operate these runs in a different format to our weekly Wednesday evening runs.

Everyone is welcome, regardless of pace, just as you are on a Wednesday, but these runs do not have a pre-planned or pre-recce’d route, meaning no advance information other than what is here. Instead, because there is often a smaller turnout, we wait to see who arrives on the day, and devise routes on-the-spot that cater for the abilities that we have with us.

We also use these runs to help equip you with the necessary skills you will need to go out and do this kind of thing on your own, or in smaller groups of friends, etc. Skills include map reading, use of a compass, grid references, route planning, map distance to running time estimation, and of course personal safety. Saturday routes are more rural than the weekday runs, and tend to be further from civilisation.

For this reason, Saturday runs have a minimum kit requirement, and for personal safety we will enforce a no-kit-no-run policy.

The route distances will remain at around the 5K and 10K mark, but as ever, because of the nature of Trail Running it can be hard to guarantee exact distances. Sometimes they will be accurate, other times they will be shorter or longer.

The minimum kit requirements for ALL RUNNERS will be:

  • Suitable clothing for the weather at the time of departure.
  • A warm layer (such as micro-fleece).
  • A waterproof layer.
  • Fluid (ideally water).
  • Nutrition (such as cereal bars – smaller items for energy boost or in case of emergency).
  • Map of the area (we will have copies available, and route annotation on the day, for guided runs).
  • Mobile Phone (if you have one – whilst signal can be limited, by signing up to 999 emergency text service you will be able to make emergency texts should it be required).
  • A small back-pack, bladder-pack or running vest to carry essential kit.

Additional kit that we would recommend when heading into the hills:

  • A compass is a worthwhile investment (if you are heading out on your own rather than with a guided run then this should be a compulsory item – it is an essential navigation tool, just as a map is).
  • Survival Kit (which hopefully you should never ever have to use).
  • Survival Blanket (or foil wrap, for retaining body-heat in case of an emergency).
  • Emergency Shelter (a small waterproof sheet cut in such a way that it allows you to sit under it to create a waterproof and windproof shell).
  • Emergency Whistle.

A final reminder that as with all runs you do so at your own risk and take responsibility for your own actions. You should be fit and healthy at the time of the run. If not, then you should not run. If you are unsure then please ask – do not set off if in doubt. Your personal safety is your own responsibility, and as such all runners must carry the minimum kit requirement as stated above, and ideally the additional kit stated also. We do not offer first aid cover, provide equipment, or recover runners from the route, under normal circumstances. Dogs are welcome but must be kept under control on short leads and only one per runner. You must always abide by the countryside code, always abide by the highway code where relevant, park legally and with consideration, and at all times act legally and responsibly.
