About T.R.Y

Who?

Trail Running Yorkshire (T.R.Y) is a trail running community based in and around York. We also offered guided trail running holidays and instruction.

What?

Running does not have to be boring! Why not explore, visit the sights and finish off a great run with great people by having a nice relaxing drink at the local watering hole? Sometimes we might even have a meal too!

When & Where?

We have three different types of events; Weekly, Monthly and Short Break Trail Running Holidays.

Weekly: Every Wednesday 6.30pm for a 6.45pm start.

Because its boring running the same routes over and over, we have a different venue every time! A kind of mini-tour of York and the surrounding areas.

There are four ways to find out where we are;

  1. Run calendar
  2. Facebook Group Page
  3. Facebook Community Events Page
  4. Receive emails direct to your inbox sign up below

Runs are ~1hr and during the summer months we usually have a short run of ~5k and a long ~10k.  Night runs during the Winter months require the carrying of a working head torch.

Monthly:  Saturdays 10am for a 10.30am start:

Exploring locations a little further afield such as the Moors, Dales and Coast. These runs are slightly more adventurous, but catering for varying abilities. Use the links above to find out more.

Due to the more remote locations these runs usually require the carrying of the following kit. Please do not let this put you off, contact us for more information particularly if you want some advice before purchasing.

  • Space Blanket
  • Food
  • Drink
  • Full Waterproofs (particularly in winter)
  • Whistle
  • Warm-thin top (winter)
  • Mobile Phone
  • Small Rucsac

Short Break: Trail Running Holidays.

These are open to all (including those that have never been to a TRY event and those living outside North Yorkshire). This is a chance to explore further afield. All trips are catered, and include expert instruction as well as the opportunity to meet like minded people. Previous trips have included; The Scottish Borders, Northumberland, Yorkshire Dales and The Lake District.

TRY Challenge: Trail Running Adventures

Building on from our weekend events, TRY Challenges are held once a year often in Spring or Autumn. These events are slightly longer (4 – 6 days) and are an opportunity for a small team to take on a National Trail or challenge. Details are usually released at the start of the year, and most events sell out very quickly. To find out more please visit our recent blog and keep an eye on our event page.

FAQs and Questions

  • How fit do I need to be?

As a minimum you should be able to walk/jog 5K, and should be fit and healthy to participate. All runners do so at their own risk, and every runner must submit a disclaimer form and ParQ form before they will be allowed to run which will be valid for 12 months unless any details change, upon which it is your responsibility to update us.

  • Will there be an instructor?

All our runs will be guided by England Athletics Qualified Running Coaches and Run Leaders, our lead instructor is also a qualified Personal Trainer and Mountain Leader. In addition we also have a willing band of volunteers who will be assisting on each route. However, it remains the responsibility of the individual runner to ensure they are familiar with the route and have with them the correct clothing and equipment for the event. We DO NOT provide any clothing, equipment, food, drink or medical cover.

  • What do I need with me?

Wearing:

Suitable clothing for the activity that you are doing. Breathable, wicking, quick drying fabrics are best. Also, brighter coloured clothing ensures that you are visible, for your own safety and to help the trail leaders keep an eye on you. Appropriate footwear is also essential.

Carrying:

Wednesday runs often only require the clothes you are wearing and fluids.

Saturday and Trail Running Holidays require additional equipment (see above for kit list). The weather can change quickly and without warning when out on the trails, so it is essential that you have with your everything you will need to keep you dry, warm and safe.

We do not supply any food, drink or equipment. It is the responsibility of each runner to provide their own, if you are unsure of what you may need for a particular run then please ask ahead of the event we will only be to happy to advise.

  • Where will the routes go?

We make basic route information available prior to each run, including a meet point and information on any costs that may be associated with the run such as parking charges etc. We’ll also tell you if we are planning on a drink and/or meal afterwards too, and where it will be. We love supporting local businesses, so chances are it will be a cafe or public house local to the run location.

  • What happens if I need to turn back?

Everyone runs at their own risk, and whilst the runs are generally guided, the Trail Leaders cannot take responsibility for you. If you need to turn back and return to the meet point it is your own responsibility to ensure that a Trail Leader knows you are doing so, and to make your own way back. Depending on the specific run, a Trail Leader or volunteer ‘may‘ be available to assist you back to the start, but this cannot be guaranteed.

  • Can I bring my dog?

On Weds and Saturday runs we are happy for runners to bring dogs along, although there should be only one dog per runner and it must be on a short lead at all times. It is unlikely but not definite that you will be unable to bring your dog on trail running holidays but please feel free to inquire.

  • How much will it cost?

All weekday and weekend runs have a minimal cost of £3 per runner, to help cover our admin expenses in organising the routes. Trail running holiday costs vary see specific events for details.

  • Where can I find more information?

This website will feature route info, news about the group, have pictures from our runs, and share the stories of our members – so, with that in mind, if you have anything you would like to share then please let us know by emailing us.

You can also request to join our closed Facebook Group, where we’ll be posting up-to-date news and info, holding discussions and using it as a general community of T.R.Y’ers! And, if you are partial to a bit of tweeting, then you can also follow us on Twitter too!

Thanks for your interest in Trail Running York, and we look forward to seeing you at one of our runs soon!
