Meet in the car park of the Royal Oak – Nunnington http://www.nunningtonroyaloak.co.uk/

Route Starts at 18.45 – 19:00. Please arrive from 18.30 especially if you have not been before and have yet to submit a disclaimer and parq form. These can be downloaded using the links in the right hand side bar. Please print off, fill in and bring with you to speed up the process.

Parking: Car parking is in and around the village, as ever please park responsibly and carefully, car sharing where possible. Please do not attempt to park at the pub as the car park is not large enough to accommodate us. If you would like to add a few extra K on to your run then there is a small lay-by at the top of Caulkleys Bank that will take around 6 vehicles. This is located where the route crosses the main road, so would be handy for a water stop for the longer route runners.

Route:  Long and short routes available.
Both routes
1. Head out of the village heading east along the river towards West Ness. Please note that the marked footpath has been legally diverted – the route maps have been updated to reflect this. You will need to run approx. 100mtr up the road (away from the bridge) and you will see the new signage pinned to the stile where the new route is now in place. A Public Footpath marker ring is also in place.
2. Head south via the road and on to bridlepath Caulkleys Lane.
3. Cross the road at the top of Caulkleys Bank, taking care as it can be busy, after which the route splits.

Short Route – 7K

4. After 500m take first bridlepath on the RIGHT enjoying a nice downhill to the village. At the road, cross and run past the church down to the pub which will be on your left.

Long Route – 11K
4. On reaching Stonegrave follow the road for 200m. THIS IS A BUSY MAIN ROAD so please stick to the right and single file (path available for all but a 15 mtr stretch).
5. Take first footpath on the right and follow as it snakes uphill. When you approach the break in the hedgerow the route swings left (keeping the hedgerow on your right), and then again to the right after approx. 200mtr, before beginning to descend. You will be able to see the next part of the route to your front slight left as you run downhill.
6. On reaching the road turn left then take first footpath on the right into low moor plantation. Follow the gravel track as it snakes left then right.
7. After 600m take next footpath on the right (at the tree line) and follow the river back into Nunnington.

Important Information

At the start of both routes the original public footpath has been diverted. Continue on up the road for approx. 100mtr and you will see the new path marked.

After the public footpath diversion there is a 200mtr stretch of field system that may have cattle in it. Please respect it and walk. If you are unhappy about crossing the field you can follow the path to the right up to the road, turn left and follow the road to the junction – the Caulkleys Lane bridle path is on your right just after this junction.

After the potential cattle field there is another 200mtr stretch where the crops are high on your right and the general undergrowth is high on your left. The path underfoot is also lumpy. This section should be a walk-only section to ensure you do not injure yourself. There is a chance of turning your ankle should you attempt to run it. Long leggings are advisable.

The last K of the long route is starting to become overgrown – as you trace the river back into Nunnington. It is still runnable but long leggings are advisable.

Proper Trail Trainers with good support and grip are advisable for this route, but given the weather the route is currently dry.

Please consider the weather – this route is exposed on the tops – if it is cold ensure you have a sufficiently warm layer with you. If it is warm ensure you carry water to stay hydrated. There are no water stations.

Drinks afterwards in the Royal Oak Nunnington http://www.nunningtonroyaloak.co.uk/

Surface: Road 5% Field Paths 75% Tracks 20%
Mud Factor: Should be dry! 0.1%

Highlights: This is the Howardian Hills at its finest, spectacular views and a nice run along the river, a favourite for this area.
Difficulty Rating: Medium, there are some hills, but they are worth the sweeping views.
Escape Route: There is a telephone box at West Ness and Nunnington route is equal distance between all three villages so either return via same pathway or proceed to next village
Hazards: This route runs along the river, so obvious caution is needed and due to crop levels some of the field systems may be difficult to negotiate, but the majority of tracks are runnable. As usual if livestock is present and curious please give it the respect it deserves and walk where necessary.

Please also ensure that you adhere to the countryside code, and take with you all your litter, close gates, keep dogs on short leads, and do not disturb cattle or other wildlife, keeping noise to a minimum.
